Non-toxic Home Cleaning Remedies
Spring is officially here...and so is Spring cleaning. But, before you pull out the cleansers and cleaners remember this — cleaning products are among the most hazardous chemicals you will find in your home or office. In fact; they're regulated by the Consumer Products Division under the Hazardous Products Act. General purpose cleaners can be toxic, corrosive, irritating, and flammable and are also part of our escalating hazardous waste stream.
Going green is easier than most people realize. Chances are, you already have all the ingredients you need right in your kitchen. If you've got baking soda, vinegar and lemon, you're set to go.
Here are a few simple tips to make your home less toxic to yourself, your family, your children and your pets.
- Baking Soda: is one of the most versatile products in your kitchen. Mix it with water to create a paste and you'll be amazed at what stains it can conquer!
- Drain opener: dissolve a half-cup of baking soda and 1 cup of vinegar in 3 cups of boiling water. Pour the solution down the drain and continue to flush with hot tap water until the clog breaks.
- To clean your microwave: fill a small plastic bowl with water and a couple of lemon wedges and put the bowl in the microwave for 3 minutes on high. The steam will loosen the dried food particles which can then be easily wiped away with a sponge. Plus, the lemon leaves a nice fresh scent.
- To clean windows: Yes, your mother was right! A simple solution of vinegar and water cuts through the grease and dirt. Dry the windows with old newspapers for a streak-less and lint-less shine.
- Green leafy plants: decrease the amount of Carbon Monoxide and increase the amount of Oxygen in your home.
- Pet Hair: One of the easiest ways to remove pet hair is with a rubber dishwashing glove. The rubber actually rolls the pet hair off the fabric, whether it's a couch, carpet or clothing.
- Kitty Boxes: spread a layer of baking soda in the bottom of the litter box before adding the litter. It helps deodorize the area and keeps the smell down.
- Cleaning Silver Jewellery: sprinkle a layer of baking soda in the bottom of an aluminium roast pan (or aluminium foil in the bottom of a glass pan; it has to be aluminium, that's the secret). Add boiling water and then dunk your jewellery. The tarnish will come off in a matter of seconds!
These are just a few of the many alternative, home-made, inexpensive and organic ways to clean your home safely. And you can breathe easier knowing just exactly what you're breathing.
